The Shakespeare Quiz or 100 Questions for the Stratfordians to Answer

Johnson, Edward, D., The Shakespeare Quiz or 100 Questions for the Stratfordians to Answer, The Francis Bacon Society, London, 1957, pp.29

An excellent pamphlet packed with 100 key questions for Stratfordians from the Birmingham lawyer, prolific writer and Honorary President of The Francis Bacon Society.

In the Preface he states, 'I accused the Shakespeare Trust of taking money under false pretences by charging the credulous visitors to Stratford the sum of 1/6 for the privilege of gazing at a room in which they are told Shakspere was born, which is quite untrue. . .I should be grateful if "The Shakespeare Trust" would bring an action of libel against me, when the whole matter could be threshed out in the Law Courts and the public at last learn the truth about the Shakespeare birthplace.'

E.D.J. as he was known was, ‘A prominent and formidable controversialist in the 1930s, uncompromising and fearless in debate. . he offered once a £1000 reward, through the Press, to anyone who could prove the authenticity of the Stratford ‘Birthplace’. E.D.J. was well aware of the weakness of the Stratford legend, and the strength of his own legal position. Of course the challenge was not accepted, by the Birthplace Trustees or any other interested party; and this was a great disappointment to him, though perhaps sound tactics on the part of the orthodox.’
