The Bacon-Shakespeare Anatomy

Dr.  Melsome, William, Stanley, The Bacon-Shakespeare Anatomy, George Lapworth & Company, London, 1945. pp. 250.

Surgeon, lecturer and writer of many medical works on anatomy, Dr Melsome was also highly accomplished as a Baconian scholar and at the time of his death in 1944 was Editor of Baconiana and President of the Bacon Society. His prodigious memory made him equally familiar with the writings of both Shakespeare and Francis Bacon which ‘enabled him to recognize the complete harmony of mind existing between the philosophical poet and the poetical philosopher.’ During Dr. Melsome’s last illness, The Bacon-Shakespeare  Anatomy manuscript was entrusted to Roderick L. Eagle for editing and preparation for publication.

Unfortunately Dr. Melsome did not live to see its publication but we are left with a highly learned but very readable work illuminating the facts that Dr Melsome makes himself in the introduction, ‘passage after passage in Shakespeare find their only explanations and likenesses in the works, letters, speeches, etc. of Bacon.’
